Overview:

The Cedar City Field Office has one Wildlife Technician position available that will be hired for the summer field season. A person working in this position can expect to apply their education in various settings, learning on-the-ground field applications, BLM inventory and monitoring procedures, and uses of the data.

Responsibilities:

The selectee will conduct wildlife baseline inventories to document wildlife and wildlife habitat presence, diversity, relative abundance and distribution. Information collected will allow for the following: The selectee will participate as an interdisciplinary team member in the overall fieldwork and monitoring program for the wildlife, riparian, threatened and endangered species. The technician should expect to learn about a broad range of responsibilities, duties and issues associated with the wildlife and threatened and endangered species management programs .

  • Assessment of seasonal migratory bird use of habitat improvements for long term effects monitoring (e.g., bird point counts, raptor nest monitoring)
  • Determinations of existing wildlife diversity, densities, and habitat utilization
  • Assessments of impacts upon wildlife and wildlife habitat as a result of a treatment
  • Assessments of the need to further mitigate impacts of a treatment for any species or class of wildlife on or near the project area
  • Evaluations of the effectiveness of mitigation as it pertains to wildlife
  • Comparisons of habitat quality in potentially affected habitats before and after treatment activities

Qualifications:

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience working in an outdoor setting
  • Experience driving a 4x4 vehicle in rugged terrain
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
